Chama, Tierra Amarilla, Abiqui New Mexico
Rio Arriba County (N Central) map of counties
Chama.com | Tierra Amarilla Getaways | Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe
| Chama and Tierra Amarilla are within 10 miles of each other. Chama is a crossroads for travelers to and from Northwestern NM and Colorado. Tierra Amarilla is five miles from Heron Lake which is known for its 40+ pound lake trout and chokani salmon in October and November. Also nearby is El Vado Lake known for its bass and croppie. Heron, El Vado, and Abiqui lakes provide water to the Rio Grande river that supplies water for Albuquerque.
A house in tiny Abiqui was the home of famous artist Georgia O'Keeffe from 1945 until her death in 1986. She also spent a lot of time in Taos but she lived in Abiqui after the death of her mentor Alfred Stieglitz. There is a museum dedicated to her work in Santa Fe NM.
