East of Albuquerque is known to the residents as the East Mountain area. This is possibly the fastest growing area in NM. On the East side of the Sandia and Monsano mountains are plains. This is where many great ranches were established long ago, some still function. Edgewood is right over the mountains from Albuquerque and is fast becoming a bedroom community for people seeking relief from the fast track busy city life. Moriarty is just about five miles further East and it is also experiencing a major boom.
A little South of Edgewood and Moriarty is Torrance County with the county seat of Estancia and the tiny town, currently being rediscovered by artists, of Mountainaire. A little North of Edgewood is Madrid. a totally unique type of community in the hills on the East side of the Sandias. An old (and closed) hard and soft coal mining town with historical structures rennovated and still standing, it is an artist's haven with very few available rentals. It is a fun place to visit but hard to live there because it is so small and the town is full. It also has a theatre specializing in melodrama.
The Sandia mountains, Manzano mountains and Ortiz mountains surround this whole area except to the East. The recently incorporated area of Edgewood is the hub of most activity in this booming country area. Development is sporadically spread about in mostly little residential subdivisions with plenty of room and large lots on which to build. There are commonly ten acre parcels or entire ranches open to building and development. Horses and dirt bikes are popular around here.
The East Mountain area has beautriful sunrises and sunsets to the west over the Sandia mountains and since the area is from 6000 to 8000 feet above sea level there are temperate summers, and white Christmas fun. Only 20 minutes from Albuquerque it serves as a very welcome alternative to city residential subdivisions which are usually with smaller lots. There are manufactured home subdivisions spread around to the Eastern part of the area and closer to the big mountain area Cedar Crest and Sandia park sport larger custom homes.
An example of sought after properties nationwide would be the San Pedro Creek Estates area and Paako subdivisions. A recent addition to secluded luxury in the area is another recently started subdivision included into the township of Edgewood on the old Campbell Ranch land. The home sites are mostly ten acres and offer good weather, awesome vistas and convienient access to either Albuquerque or Santa fe. Paako golf course is known nationwide for its beauty, and all of these three exclusive areas mentioned are probably some of the most sought after custom home building sites in the country.
