The Taos Gorge rips apart the high desert about 65 miles North of Santa Fe NM. Taos now lies to the right in this picture. The Gorge was created by an earthquake fracture in the Rio Grande River bed long ago when Valle Grande exploded. Today adverturesome people raft the Rio Grande through the Gorge ending up, usually, in Pilar - a quaint community that lies in the Gorge itself South of Taos. Valle Grande, about 40 miles to the SW of the Gorge, is the largest volcanic crater in the continental United States. Taosenos wonder if the famous "Taos Hum" is emanating somehow from the Gorge. There is now one bridge that spans the Gorge, NW of Taos, which leads to Tres Piedras, Tierra Amarilla, Chama and then North into Colorado. This specatacular natural phenomena greets visitors as they crest the hill on the road into the Taos area from the South. It feels as though the car will fly off into this enormous expanse.
This view of the Gorge and the tree are in that location.
